Joe E. Randolph II is a Director for the Americas Global Services Operations, at Microsoft in the Americas Regional Operations Center in Reno, NV.  He leads a team of 42 employees and managers across the Americas (U.S., Latin America, Canada, and U.S. Public Sector) markets. His team is responsible for contracting, billing and delivery management for the Field Sales and Delivery teams responsible for $3B in revenue annually. Joe is also on the Americas Operating Center Site Leadership team with oversite of a combined 500 employees and vendors. He was formerly employed with The Vanguard Group Inc. for five years, as a Manager in the Retail Investor Group. Leading a team of 50 employees and managers, he was responsible for the business performance, talent acquisition, and voice of the customer quality programs. He worked 10 years at Wells Fargo (formerly Wachovia), as Assistant Vice President and Senior Manager leading Fraud Operations responsible for 200 employees and managers focused on fraud risk, operational loss management  and customer support. He also held additional roles as Group Manager and Team Leader in the Wachovia Securities Retail Investment Group leading a variety of teams in Account Operations and Loss Prevention. He also was an Adjunct Professor at Johnson C. Smith University in Charlotte, NC in the Business and Economics department and at Allen University in Columbia, SC in the Division of Business Administration.

 Joe currently serves on the board for the Northern Nevada International Center (NNIC) at the University of Nevada Reno, Board member for the Northern Nevada Black Cultural Awareness Society (NNBCAS), and is the current President for the Alumni Chapter of Pi Zeta Lambda of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Inc. He also held previous board positions with the ºìÌÒÊÓÆµ Alumni Association, former President and board member for National Black MBA Association Charlotte Chapter, the Council for ChildrenºìÌÒÊÓÆµ™s Rights of Charlotte, and the Teen Health Connection of Charlotte.

 Joe is a graduate of Pfeiffer University where he obtained his MasterºìÌÒÊÓÆµ™s in business (MBA) and Master of Science in Organizational Leadership and Development (MSOL). He also graduated from ºìÌÒÊÓÆµ earning a B.S. in Business Administration.  He is also an Alumni of the NC Institute of Political Leadership (IOPL) and the Information Technology Senior Management Forum (ITSMF) Management Academy.  Joe is a ProSci Certified Change Practitioner and holds a Six Sigma Green Belt Certification.  

 Joe, originally from Gainesville, GA currently resides in Reno, NV with his wife Dacia who is a Ph.D. student in the College of Education at the University of Nevada, Reno

Daniel Shanks, ºìÌÒÊÓÆµ class of 1997, has been named the 2019 recipient of the ºìÌÒÊÓÆµ Alumni AssociationºìÌÒÊÓÆµ™s Distinguished Achievement Award. This prestigious award is given annually by the ºìÌÒÊÓÆµ Alumni Association and is presented to a graduate who has reached an outstanding level of achievement in his or her profession.

As a student at Coker, ShanksºìÌÒÊÓÆµ™s involvement was extensive. He was a member of the menºìÌÒÊÓÆµ™s basketball team and received the Timberlake Lawton Award recognizing academic achievement and community service. His other academic pursuits include a M.A. in international studies from the University of South Carolina and he is currently completing a Ph.D. program at Old Dominion University.

ShanksºìÌÒÊÓÆµ™s foreign language skills include Persian-Iranian, Persian-Afghan, Pashto-Afghan, German and Dutch, and he used these skills in his work as a Human Terrain Specialist for the Department of the Army during three years in Afghanistan. He was a critical part of the team responsible for security, intelligence and foreign policy formulation.  

Shanks is currently a Research Assistant and full-time Ph.D. student Old Dominion University, and teaches online courses for ºìÌÒÊÓÆµ in the areas of human geography, political science and international politics. He was twice elected president of the Graduate Society of International Studies.

Shanks lives in Virginia Beach, Va. With his wife Sophia Williams Shanks, Coker class of 2000.

Karen Lear Edwards, ºìÌÒÊÓÆµ class of 1998, has been named the 2018 recipient of the ºìÌÒÊÓÆµ Alumni AssociationºìÌÒÊÓÆµ™s Distinguished Achievement Award. This prestigious award is given annually by the ºìÌÒÊÓÆµ Alumni Association and is presented to a graduate who has reached an outstanding level of achievement in his or her profession.

Edwards earned her B.A. in History from Coker and a Juris Doctor degree from University of South Carolina School of Law in 2000. She was Chair of the ºìÌÒÊÓÆµ Board of Trustees 2009-2010 (member 2002-2011), and is also the class representative for CokerºìÌÒÊÓÆµ™s class of 1998.

Since 2006, Edwards has been a senior instructor in the Department of Retailing at the University of South Carolina. She is the recipient of the 2017 University of South Carolina (U.S.C.) Faculty Integrity Award, the 2016 U.S.C. College of Hospitality, Retail and Sport Management (H.R.S.M.) Brian and Linda Mihalik Global Scholar Award, and the 2010-11 Harry E. Varney Distinguished Teacher of the Year Award. Her teaching and research focuses in the areas of legal issues affecting retailers and best practices in teaching. She is a member of South Carolina Women in Higher Education, the International Anti-Counterfeiting Coalition, American MENSA, and the South Carolina Bar.

From January 2015ºìÌÒÊÓÆµ“May 2017, Edwards served at U.S.C.ºìÌÒÊÓÆµ™s Center for Teaching Excellence as the Associate Director for Distributed Learning Pedagogy. She was responsible for working with faculty and to promote awareness and implementation of best practices in distributed learning pedagogy and course design among those who teach at U.S.C. More specifically, her duties included supporting the ProvostºìÌÒÊÓÆµ™s Distributed Learning grantee cohort, developing and presenting workshops on distributed learning and related topics, conducting individual consultations with faculty regarding best practices for teaching online and blended courses, helping develop CTE programming and speaker events related to distributed learning, promoting scholarship and research related to distributed learning on campus, and serving as a senior-level resource on distributed learning.

Prior to working at U.S.C., Edwards was the Senior Associate Attorney at Duff & White in Columbia, S.C., from 2001-2006.

Edwards has published extensively in a variety of journals and publications. She is a successful grant writer and fundraiser for U.S.C. and the U.S.C. College of H.R.S.M. She has chaired and participated in many university committees and initiatives, including the ProvostºìÌÒÊÓÆµ™s Advisory Committee on WomenºìÌÒÊÓÆµ™s Issues, the Faculty SenateºìÌÒÊÓÆµ™s Committee on Intellectual Property, and U.S.C.ºìÌÒÊÓÆµ™s Committee on Instructional Development.

EdwardsºìÌÒÊÓÆµ™s community service includes the Central South Carolina Mensa, the Committee on Law Related Education, S.C. Bar Association, and Big Brothers & Big Sisters of Greater Columbia. She is an active member at Shandon Baptist Church in Columbia.

Edwards lives in Columbia, S.C., with her husband Dave Edwards, and is the proud stepmother of two wonderful young men, Colby Edwards, of Atlanta, Ga., and Kyle Edwards, of Columbia, S.C.

EdwardsºìÌÒÊÓÆµ™s award will be presented at 5:30pm on Saturday, February 10, at Drengaelen House during ºìÌÒÊÓÆµºìÌÒÊÓÆµ™s alumni Homecoming reception.
