Louise Rivers Matthews passed into heaven on January 22, 2024, surrounded by her three sons and her daughter-in-law. Louise was born Virginia Louise Rivers on December 11, 1927 in Hartsville, SC to Ruby DuBose Rivers and James U. (Bill) Rivers. Her love of family was epitomized throughout her life from caring for her parents to her ever-present desire to be involved in her 6 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildrenƵs lives and activities, when possible.  Louise lived a very full life full of adventures with her husband, George E. Matthews, Sr. Married for 72 years, they met while George was staying at a boarding house run by her grandparents and she was attending nearby Coker College. Their young love was strong and they wanted to get married as soon as possible, but Louise made a promise to her parents that they would wait until after she graduated college. Promises are promises and she kept that promise, but by only an hour! They drove directly from graduation straight to their wedding ceremony. Their love was one for the ages and it only grew stronger over their years together.  Louise began her long teaching career at that time. She taught elementary school in McColl, SC, Bennettsville, SC, and Mt. Croghan, SC before moving to Wadesboro, where she taught elementary, middle, and high school.  She always worked diligently with her students to bring out their very best and always looked for ways to make learning a positive experience. She was known for rearranging desks to keep her students on their toes and even brought in her rug to make for a more ƵhomeyƵ atmosphere.

ƵMs. LouiseƵ was widely recognized for her excellence in teaching and was selected to ƵWhoƵs Who in American TeachersƵ. Among her most rewarding teaching experiences was her time at J.R. Faison on Salisbury Street, serving under Principal John R. Marable and with co-teacher Ms. Vivian Price. This was the first year that Anson County schools were fully integrated, and she was in the first group of white teachers at the school. Times have changed so much in the County and she will always be grateful for having the opportunity to help different communities of students come together positively.

A lifelong learner, Louise embraced new technologies that would allow her to stay connected with family while also staying abreast of current events throughout the world. She would learn all of the latest technological gadgets and online tools to keep her connected to things and people she loved. She kept up with news and politics on her tablet and smartphone. She monitored downtown Wadesboro activities through her five security cameras. When anyone in her family flew, she tracked their plane en route with the FlightAware app. She texted daily with children, grandchildren, and even great-grandchildren. She even solved the New York Times online Wordle puzzle each morning before breakfast. When technology problems popped up, more often than not she would troubleshoot them herself, using Google, YouTube, or her own wits.

Louise also loved expressing herself through art. Whether it was through watercolor paintings of various nature scenes or various pieces of poetry, she sought to express the beauty of GodƵs creation and the human experience. A poem about a lone soldier during the Gulf War earned recognition in a local poetry contest. She encouraged others to explore their creativity while teaching her students to embrace all of what an education could offer.

There will be a private service for her family to reminisce and celebrate her life.

Her family extends their deepest appreciation to all those in Wadesboro who made it possible for her to live independently until two weeks before her death. We especially thank Gaye and Matt Harrington, Steve Bailey, OliverƵs Restaurant, Ansonia Soup Company, Aaron Shaver of Parsons Drug Company, and Dr. Michael Lincoln who understood her needs and her desire to move furniture.

Louise is survived by their three sons and their families: Rick and his wife Carolyn of Winston-Salem, their children Mark (Florence) and their children,  Eleanor and James; Kelly Matthews Silliman (Shawn) and their children, Wyatt and McKinley; Mike  Matthews of Richmond, VA and his daughters Molly Matthews-Ewald (Chris) and their daughter, Jocelyn; and Aline Matthews; Kip Matthews and his wife Kimberly of Athens, GA, their children Patrick and Schuyler.

Memorial gifts may be made to Mount Croghan Methodist Church, PO Box 26, Mt. Croghan, SC 29727, The First United Methodist Church, 118 E. Morgan Street, Wadesboro, NC  28170-2202, or Trellis Supportive Care, 101 Hospice Lane, Winston Salem, NC  27103.

She has now been received by God who brought her into the world, the God who journeyed with her in life and faith, and the God who has now welcomed her home in death. May she rest in peace and rise in glory.

Peggy Greene Hicks, 95, completed her life of service to her dearest Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, and made her passage into His eternal glory on April 26, 2022.

Having fully accepted the love of Christ, Peggy lived to extend that same love to others. Whether it was her husband, children, grandchildren, her extended family and church family, or the many people she met over the decades of her ministry, she left love wherever she went. Peggy was a music major from Coker College, S.C., and her incomparable voice harmonized her walk with the Lord throughout her life. She was the ultimate partner in ministry to her beloved husband of 64 years, Dr. Wade Bryant Hicks (M. Theron Rankin Professor of Missions and World Religions at Southern Baptist Theological Seminary) who passed away in 2014.

In addition to being a minister’s wife (Buck Run Baptist 1950-1955), she was a missionary to the Philippines from 1955-1965 where she established the Seminary Kindergarten in Baguio. Peggy exemplified the power of grace with her joyful servanthood for over 50 years through Lyndon Baptist Church, as the Director of Friendship International, as a previous President of the Women’s Missionary Union, and through the many lives, she inspired to join in the call to help spread the Good News of the Gospel. Over the years, Peggy was also honored to have hosted innumerable seminary students and internationals in her home.

Peggy will be remembered for the love and joy that she exuded. In addition to being a faithful servant to the Lord, she was a devoted and loving wife, Mother, Grandmother, Great-Grandmother, Sister, Aunt, and friend to anyone she met and she will be deeply missed by everyone that knew her.

In addition to her husband, Peggy is preceded in death by her parents, Jeffrey Otho and Lenora Glover Greene; a sister, Delores Stanley (Richard); and a brother, Lehman Greene (Ann).

Left to cherish her memory are her children, Wade B. Hicks Jr. (Marian), Bonnie Ginter (Brownie), and Dr. Lee Greene Hicks (Debbie); grandchildren, Camden Ginter, Wade B. Hicks III (Jenny), Cori Ginter Hill (Ben), Scott Hicks (Amanda), Cody Ginter (Justine) Hunter Hicks, Kaylee Hicks Gouge (Vince), and Emily Hicks; and great-grandchildren, Owen, Everett, and Lydia Hicks, Alethea, Declan, Evie, and Finley Hill, Emrie and Kaden Hicks and Olivia, Layla and Dakota Ginter.

A service to celebrate Peggy’s life will take place at 11:00 am on Saturday, June 18, 2022, at Lyndon Baptist Church (8025 New La Grange Road, Louisville, Kentucky). The family invites guests to visit before the service from 9:00-11:00 am at the church.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in Peggy’s honor to Kentucky WMU Heritage Fund c/o Kentucky Baptist Foundation (PO Box 436389 Louisville, KY 40253-6389 or online at www.KYWMU.org/HF) or to Nik Ripken Ministries (PO Box 1314 Shelbyville, KY 40066-1314 or online at www.nikripken.com/donate)

Those in attendance are asked to wear masks and practice social distancing. The service will be livestreamed on the Posey Funeral Directors Facebook page.
Mrs. Elam, a native of Florence, SC had resided in North Augusta since 1963. The daughter of Ruth White Davis and “Doc” Clarence S. Davis Sr. (pharmacist), she attended Florence public schools before entering Coker College, Hartsville, SC in 1944. She earned her B.A. Degree in Journalism from the University of South Carolina, Columbia in 1948. She went on to be employed in radio copy writing at WGAC and WJBF in Augusta, GA.
In 1953, she married Elliott Fuqua Elam, Sr. of Prospect, VA and became a stay-at-home Mom until 1970. She was a feisty and loving Mother who will be missed every day. She returned to USC and earned an M.A. in Library Science. For eighteen years, she served as the Librarian/Media Specialist at Hammond Hill Elementary School in North Augusta. A devoted member of the First Baptist Church of North Augusta, she taught Sunday School classes, participated in two choirs and held office in the senior fellowship club.
Elliott Sr., her husband of 49 years, passed away in 2002. Survivors include a daughter, R. Elaine Elam of Roswell, GA; two sons, Dr. Warren D. Elam (Christina) of Evans, GA; and Elliott F. Jean and Elliott spent many hours in the garden growing show-type Chrysanthemums, beautiful tomatoes and other vegetables. She often said that she liked growing things in partnership with God: her family, friendships and plants. A favorite quote from Rudyard Kipling: “Oh Adam was a gardener, and God made him see that half a proper gardener’s work is done upon his knees. So, when your work is finished, you can wash your hands and pray for the glory of the Garden, that it may not pass away.”

Betty Padgett Black, 93, died on Thursday, February 18, 2021 in Roper Hospital after a brief illness. She was an active member of Bethel Presbyterian Church where she served as an elder, member of the choir, and assistant treasurer. In 2019, she was bestowed the honorary title of Elder Emerita, for over 62 years of service, dedication, and commitment to her beloved Bethel Presbyterian Church. Mrs. Black was born in Walterboro, South Carolina on April 6, 1927, her mother’s birthday. She was the wife of the late John Tarrant Black and the youngest daughter of Sheriff Lucas Carroll Padgett and Coralie Ackerman Padgett. A graduate of Coker College and the Medical University of South Carolina, she worked as a medical technologist and later as a third-grade teacher. She had a vivacious personality, was very popular amongst her friends, and received more Ƶsenior superlativesƵ than was appropriate for the size of her high school class. Although it seems trite – the first thing anyone would say to describe her was that she never met a stranger. She was an aficionado of life-long learning before it even had a name, and along with her late friend Anna Lou Marvin took many college classes in art and history at the University of South Carolina Salkehatchie-Walterboro campus, diligently completing every assignment and taking every test. She had many friends of all ages – but she and two of her lifelong, childhood friends, also named Betty, were affectionately known as the Ƶthree BƵsƵ (Betty Marvin Linder and Bettyline Pope Moylan).

Mrs. Black was a woman of many interests; she majored in music and loved to attend concerts and live operas shown in Charleston-area movie theaters. When clubs were active, she was a member of the Fine Arts Club, the Literary Club, the Daughters of the American Revolution, the Colonial Dames, Carleton’s Book Club and the Colleton County Historical and Preservation Society. She was known for her quick wit and comebacks, always laughing first at her own words. She had no “screen,Ƶ would say what she thought, and her children have been happy to hear how many people enjoyed her company. She volunteered with their scout troops and hauled them to every archaeological dig in the Lowcountry. All she and her husband insisted was that they always do their best. She will be sorely missed by all who had the pleasure to know her.

Mrs. Black was pre-deceased by her husband, The Honorable John Tarrant Black, and is survived by his sister, Beneva Black Ouzts of Columbia; four children: Carol Padgett Black of Alexandria, Virginia; John Tarrant Black, Jr. and wife Denise of Mt. Pleasant and Edisto Island (and their children Eva, Will (Shannon) and Gordon (Ellison); Nancy Black Skardon and husband Taylor of Charleston and Edisto Island (and their children Elizabeth, Frances and Padgett); James Benjamin Black II and wife Trish of Mt. Pleasant (and their children Caroline and Andrew); three great grandchildren, three nieces, two nephews, and many cousins – all of whom she loved dearly. She was also pre-deceased by her brother, Lucas C. Padgett, and two sisters, Lena Coralie Padgett and Nancy Padgett Bergmark.

The family would especially like to thank Mrs. Black’s companions/caregivers: Bernice Perry, Cherie Van Dyke, Gladiola Holmes, Thelma Stephens, Jeannette Smith, Connie Johnson, and – for 20 years – Iola Allen. Additionally, they would like to express their deep appreciation to the congregation of Bethel Presbyterian Church led by their Pastor Henry Meeuwse and Mrs. Janis Blocker, Clerk of Session.

Due to COVID restrictions, the family will receive guests on the front lawn of Bethel Presbyterian Church from 1:00-2:45PM on Wednesday, February 24, 2021 before attending a private funeral service at 3PM which will be livestreamed on the churchƵs Facebook page. Masks are required. Parker-Rhoden Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements. Memorials may be made to Bethel Presbyterian Church in Walterboro, or Colleton County Meals on Wheels.
