On December 12, 2025, at the age of 94, Joan Carter McKissick, of聽, joined her beloved husband, John, in Heaven.

The family will welcome any who wish to attend her Celebration of Life Service on Saturday, December 20th, at 2:00 PM. The service will be graveside at Summerville Cemetery (Park’s Cemetery), 640 Boone Hill Rd., Highway 17-A South. Following the service, the family will also receive friends from 3:00 – 4:30 at the John McKissick Museum, 805 South Main Street, Summerville (right next to the stadium).

Joan was born on March 20, 1931, in聽, to Earl and Edelle Carter, and was the first of three children (brother, Bud and sister, Linda). She moved to聽聽as a young girl and graduated from Kingstree High School in 1949. She also attended Coker College in聽, where she earned an Associate Degree in Business Education.

Joan met, fell in love with, and married John McKissick in Kingstree in June of 1952. Later that summer, because John took the job as Head Football Coach at Summerville High School, they moved to Summerville and spent the rest of their lives enjoying the warm and friendly feel of their hometown. Joan spent 30 years as a mail carrier, delivering mail all over Summerville, and she especially liked meeting and getting to know the people she served. She was actually the first female mail carrier in South Carolina and was celebrated in a parade when she retired.

Joan enjoyed reading (mostly books from Timrod Library), playing bridge with friends, and dancing (especially if she was shagging to beach music). More importantly though, she cherished the opportunities that she was given to serve her church and her community. She was a longtime member of Bethany United Methodist Church, serving as a Lay Leader, President of United Methodist Women and the Hazel Melia Circle, coordinating their Sesquicentennial Celebration, and working with a committee to compile the church history. Community activities included serving as a Dorchester School District Two School Board member, a Sculpture in the South Board member, a Preservation Society Board member, a CSU Women’s Council Board member, and as a Flowertown Garden Club member.

Joan was very active in her support of her husband’s 63 year coaching career, missing only 4 games during his tenure. She stayed busy compiling scrapbooks that chronicled each and every season and kept detailed records of his coaching career. She also coordinated the annual football banquets and parent nights, and was a founding member of the Summerville High School Hall of Fame.

Joan was preceded in death by her husband of 67 years (John McKissick), her parents (Earl and Edelle Carter), and her brother (Bud Carter). She is survived by her sister, Linda Slaughter, her daughters, Debbie Call (Rick) and Cindy McElveen (Donny), four grandchildren, Richard Call (Erika), Joe Call (Elizabeth), Kyle York (Alan), Donny McElveen, III (Katie), 9 great grandchildren, Carter, Libba, Emily, John, Mayley, Mary Carter, Gracie, Bobby, Meyers, and several nephews.

Joan loved flowers, but she also loved to support her community, so memorials may be made to the (1) Summerville High School Athletic Club, Inc. c/o McKissick Memorial Football Fund, Post Office Box 2966,聽聽29484, (2) Timrod Library, 217 Central Avenue,聽聽29483-6004, or a聽.

The family would like to express their gratitude to The Village at Summerville for the kindness and care they have given her this past year. They would also like to thank Agape (Hospice) for caring for her during the final days of her journey. Both The Village caregivers and nurses as well as the Agape team made a very difficult time more bearable.

Dear Classmates,

Do I dare speak of the birthday most of us are celebrating during this year?
It红桃视频檚 such a joy to share news of accomplishments of our classmates红桃视频 families. Betty Jean Lee Hunsinger红桃视频檚 granddaughter, Dr. Lauren Gasque Kuykenrall, was chosen Outstanding Faculty Member at George Mason University where she and her husband David both teach. Betty Jean红桃视频檚 grandson, Conan Gasque and his wife are expecting their first child in September.
It was wonderful to spend an afternoon with Charlie Chewning whose niece had come to celebrate Mother红桃视频檚 Day weekend and arranged a get-together with friends. Charlie is still residing at Bethea Baptist Home near Darlington. Joyce Bell keeps in touch with Charlie and calls regularly.
How nice it was to receive a note from Joan Carter McKissick thanking me for the memorial for her husband John. She spoke of the many wonderful memories of her years at Coker and the friends she made there.
How saddened we were to learn of the death of Lynne Eidson Dudley. She was a Hartsville native and I had taught with her mother. Lynne红桃视频檚 granddaughter is now practicing medicine in Hartsville.
It红桃视频檚 so exciting to hear that Jean Fore McDaniel and Mac plan to come to their Pawleys Island home for a visit in September. I know they will enjoy being there.
Mickey McDowell, husband of Anne Merck, is still living happily at Clemson. He is so fortunate to have children nearby.
We are anxiously awaiting the arrival of Beth DuBose Cottingham红桃视频檚 book. She loves the people of Kingstree and they love her. She and Jo Ann Boyd Sires are wonderful friends.
I keep in touch with Sarah Sampson Bell. She is very fortunate to have all three sons and their families living close enough to visit often.
As I write, Mitzi DuPre Matthews is recuperating in National Health Center after a hospital stay with pneumonia and other issues. She is so good about keeping in touch with Jennie Herlong Boatwright and Daphen Yarborough Edge.
I have been living with my daughter Brenda and her husband Keith Stewart in Marion sinceJanuary. I was diagnosed with spinal stenosis and after falling several times I came to live with them 红桃视频渢emporarily.红桃视频 I love being here and enjoy another daughter Nancy红桃视频檚 visits when her school day ends. She lives just a few blocks away. I want to go home and pray that I can improve enough that it will be safe for me to live alone. I am expecting my 10th great-grandchild any day now. It红桃视频檚 a boy! 6 boys and 4 girls. Wouldn红桃视频檛 Carl love this family?
My prayers and love are with each of you as we have all experienced an unbelievable period of our lives. May COVID soon be completely gone.
Cokernuts, do you know how blessed we are to reach our age? I would never have dreamed we would have lived this long.

Happy 90th Birthday,
Pat Chapman Huff

Felicia Brown McElveen went to her Heavenly home on Wednesday, January 6, 2021. She was 89.

Mrs. McElveen was born October 19, 1931, in the Florence County community of Bethel, spent her childhood in Olanta, but lived most of her life in Lake City. She was the daughter of predeceased parents Preston Capers Brown and Felicia Hicks Brown and sister to two brothers, Chaplain Colonel P.C. Brown Jr. and Wilbur Boyd Brown. She was married for 57 years to R. L. ‘Red’ McElveen until his death in 2011.

Mrs. McElveen was a 1953 graduate of Coker College in Hartsville, SC. She loved to travel and for many years took busloads of friends all over the 50 United States and the provinces of Canada, as well as groups on international trips abroad. She was a faithful member of Lake City First Baptist Church and made sure her daughters were raised in the knowledge of Jesus Christ as their Savior, also. Even while at an assisted living facility these last few years, she continued watching her beloved USC Gamecocks play football on TV and sponsored musical concerts for all residents to enjoy.

She is survived by two daughters: Deborah (David and son Hudson) Beard of Spartanburg, SC, and Sharon (Jerald and daughter Joye James) Altman of Lake City, SC; a sister, Catherine Brown Lee of Lumberton, NC. She deeply loved her nephews and nieces, great-nephews and nieces, and loved Maryse Garrett Davis like a granddaughter.

Deborah and Sharon wish to thank the many who loved and cared for her as their ‘other mother’ while in assisted living. Mrs. McElveen loved them as her extended family.

The family will have a private burial at the Lake City Memorial Park.

Memorials can be made to either Lake City First Baptist Church (P.O. Box 820, Lake City, SC 29560) or Coker College (Advancement Office, 300 E. College Ave, Hartsville, SC 29550).

The family would treasure your comments made through the online guestbook at聽.
