After a courageous 7-year campaign against cancer, Susan died peacefully at home surrounded by family on Kiawah Island on August 25, 2021. While the disease may have ended her life, it never defined it.

Everyone who met her felt her grace and love, especially the children. She knew children because she took the time and care to listen and understand them. When children were in the room, they had her complete attention, and any adults present were often ignored!

She was born on September 6, 1948, in Laurens, SC, to the most loving and supportive parents anyone could have, Mary and Gene Burns. She grew up in the best of times in a different world surrounded by extended family. Laurens First Baptist Church was an important part of this upbringing. She kept in regular contact with her closest friends from childhood until the end of her life. After graduating from Laurens High School at the top of her class, she graduated from Coker College, cum laude.

The summer of her junior year, she defied logic and her father to work at the beach. There, she met the love of her life, Frank, and they were married for almost 50 years. The strength of their marriage was an inspiration to many.

She had a passion for educating and nurturing children. After graduation, she taught in the public schools for 3 years. Just a few credits short of obtaining her masterƵs degree, she became pregnant with her only child, Burns. She abandoned her career for 13 years to raise Burns, and it was her greatest joy. She returned to the profession at her beloved First Baptist Church Kindergarten of Greenville, where she taught for almost 35 years.

She was blessed with 2 granddaughters, Brooks Burns and Lola Kathryne, both bearing her family names. These ƵAngel GirlsƵ were the crowning glory for their ƵNoonie.Ƶ She took great pleasure in making every moment with these girls incredibly special.

Throughout her journey, she remained resolute in her faith and positive in her attitude. She recently remarked to a friend that she was living her Ƶyucky, blessed life.Ƶ

She is survived by her devoted husband, Frank Wetmore of Kiawah Island, SC and her son and his family, Burns, Spencer, Brooks and Lola Kate Wetmore of Folly Beach, SC. Please honor her memory by showing love to the children in your life!

A memorial service will be held on Tuesday, August 31, 2021, at 11:00 AM, at First Baptist Church in Greenville, SC, conducted by Rev. Kyle Matthews. The committal service, conducted by Dr. Bev Kennedy, will be held at Forest Lawn Cemetery in Laurens, SC at 2:30 PM, following the memorial service.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to First Baptist Church, 847 Cleveland Street, Greenville, SC 29601.

Class of 70 news: April 2021

Eight members of the Class of 1970 met on Zoom Saturday April 10th, to catch up, share memories and just see each other. This was the third chosen date for our reunion to be held in person but because of Covid, once again our date was moved forward a year. We decided to meet on Zoom on this date. The attendees were: Ginger King Hilderbrand, Nell Cutts Daniels, Ginny French Lyles, Jane Brown Riechmann, Judie Cooper Camak, Becky Tuten Varner, Gayle Buchheister Sawyer and Brenda Thompson Stewart. Classmates that were unable to meet and contacted me were: Anne Bodenheimer Bell, Jane May Gable, Myra Cato Coffey and Genevieve White Sharpe.
We had a wonderful time remembering events like the ƵJug bandƵ, slamming doors to begin study hour, and a unlucky transom break due to a slammed door! We were so lucky to be able to use this marvelous tool to meet even if we canƵt meet face to face. We do hope to meet again on Zoom before our next projected reunion date.
Ann Bodenheimer Bell was not able to attend our zoom gathering because they were in Sarasota watching their granddaughter compete in a swim meet. She is the swimmer of the year for the state of Colorado high schoolClass 5a swimming. She is also going to the Olympic trials for swimming this summer and is on the Junior National swim team. They are very proud of her and canƵt wait to watch her compete. They donƵt get that opportunity very often since she lives in Colorado. Her dad, AnnƵs oldest son, is a professor of meteorology at Colorado State, just put out thehurricane forecast for the year today. His specialty is hurricanes and ispart of the team that makes the yearly predictions. Unfortunately it looks likely to be another busy hurricane season.

Jesse Markley Lee was sad not to be able to attend the zoom meeting! She had her three grandchildren, ages 6 years, 4 years and 1&1/2 years old!!!!
Needless to say she was quite busy all day! The older 2 are girls and the baby, a boy whoƵs into everything!!! Her older daughter has had Covid and had it twice. She is an RM in the ER at Lexington Hospital. JesseƵs younger daughter is too busy with 3 young children toreturn to the classroom.
Jesse is in the process of finalizing a new houseƵ.She says they are crazy to have done this…. and hope to move in the first part of June fully. We have moved some items into a “barn” on the property to keep from doing too much at one time. In June her new address will be 3425 Sawmill Drive, Sumter, SC 29150. She is praying we will have a gathering in2022, and very excited to be able to see everyone!!

Candace Constable Craven writes that she was also sorry to miss our zoom meeting. She Hoped it went well and everyone is healthy and safe. They have both been vaccinated and hugging our grandchildren was THE best! They just returned from visiting their son and his family in Denver. They are remodeling the master bath and asked for some assistance – it was so much fun taking a hammer to that tile – we made a huge mess, but we managed to get it down to the studs! I could have done without the 14 hour drive, but our new dog was with us so we drove! We will have the kids for 2 weeks in July and we sure are hoping things are open a little more than last summer. Thank heavens our cabin is on a lake and everyoneenjoys swimming, kayaking, canoeing, fishing, etc.
Gayle Buckheister Sawyer and George attended graduation ceremonies at Coker this spring in the DeLoach Center on campus. As we look toward our 50th class reunion on April 1 – 2, 2022, be sure to take advantage of the campus tours to see the Center if you didn’t at our 45th reunion when it was brand new. The Sawyer and Buckheister families celebrated a BIG birthday for George via Zoom in May. What delightful chaos to have the siblings and cousins together from around the US. Although we have canceled plans to travel in 2021, we are planning adventures for 2022. We hope to see, in person, our family and some of you on our way.
Jane Brown Riechmann sent news of a busy summer. They will be enjoying Crescent Beach, FL for a week in June with younger son Tim, his wife Kate and two grandchildren, 4-year Ƶold Nora and 21 month old Shep, celebrating their 50th anniversary in Palm Beach in mid-July, attending JaneƵs 55th Laurens High School reunion on August 21 and then off to the Grand Tetons and Yellowstone with elder son Rob and his wife Tina the following week. Maybe September will bring some relaxation!

Nancy Ashcraft Hinchey, 71, of Awendaw, South Carolina, passed away peacefully on January 15, 2020 surrounded by her family, after a five year battle with ovarian cancer.

She was born on April 5,1948 in Charlotte, North Carolina, daughter of the late Clarina Bevis and Joseph Ashcraft. Nancy is survived by her loving husband, James J. Hinchey, III; grandchildren Joseph Wenger, Jimmy Wenger, John Geary Wenger, Jude Wenger and Mary Nell Miller.

Nancy grew up in Charlotte, NC. She enjoyed spending time with her family and developed a love of nature, birds, art, and gardening from her father. Nancy graduated from MeyerƵs Park High School and later from Coker College. After graduation, she moved to New Port News, VA. to begin her teaching career. She was set up on a blind date with a young infantry officer, Lt. Jim Hinchey, who was stationed at Ft. Monroe, after returning from Vietnam. Jim and Nancy were married in August 1971 just months after they met. Jim was due to start law school right after the wedding, so NancyƵs father arranged for a helicopter to take the new couple from the wedding to the airport.

Jim and Nancy started their lives together in Green Bay, Wisconsin where they raised their 4 children. Life eventually brought Nancy, Jim and their family to Charleston, where she continued her teaching career.

In life Nancy was passionate about shaping the lives of her children and grandchildren. She also believed strongly in the value of influencing the lives of her students at OƵQuinn School of Porter Gaud, where she was voted teacher of the year by her peers. She instilled a passion for learning, reading and art in her kindergartners, all of whom she loved dearly, while at OƵQuinn.

Sincere apologies that this information was not included in the Commentary.

Martha Flowers Herbertwrites that she visited Augusta Burn Center for the 4th anniversary of her burn and saw many of the folks involved in her recovery; her Burn surgeon, nurses from the ICU and others from the 2 floors of her extended stay. She got to see her therapists and was able to witness to and inspire patients presently undergoing treatment. She records that it was an extremely rewarding day for her to Ƶshow offƵ how well sheƵs doing and to be able to tell them all thanks for working on her. Martha had a visit with Gayle and George Sawyer and talked to Candee Scott Craven recently. Shewas atLake Junaluska, NCfor the 4th of July for a huge Herbert family reunion …35 family members were able to attend this year …from California, Florida, Vermont, Texas, Virginia, Maryland Georgia, SC and NC. Her truck gets “all 4th-ed out” and is in the Junaluska parade…which they have won several times! Huge family fun! Then there was an annual beach trip, with 15 relatives piled in a huge house at Litchfield.Martha still quilts, and knocks around in her yard when it is not too hot.Her most fun quilt lately was a “sign in quilt” for her veterinarianƵs wedding. Even her 4 dogs and Duncan, the cat “signed” their paw prints. It was made with alternating blocks of white, teal, and navy. No regular sign in book for her!! Martha has been having fun with Violet….Ƶbet she has done things with me that you would not expose her to……swamp adventures, a parade, burn hospital, the museum for our quilt show….stuff that would make Dean Mills flip!Ƶ. Martha says ƵSee you in April!Ƶ

Ginny French Lyleswrites that It is hard to believe that we have a “milestone” reunion coming up. She enjoyed reading about GayleƵs trip to Alaska and said that she would have loved to join “Miss Violet”,Gayle and the others on that trip.Ginny is having a hard time getting used to the new Ƶ name on the Commentary. Even her daughter made a comment about how strange it looks when she saw it on her coffee table.

Ginny misses living in Hartsville but does enjoy being involved with her 2 grandchildren in Summerville, S.C. She volunteers at their school and picks them up from school 2 to 3 days a week. They belong to GinnyƵs daughter Sarah, who is a CPA and partner with Dixon, Hughes, Goodman, LLP Accounting and Bookkeeping in Charleston, SC. Her grandson Asa is in 7th grade this year and is very active in football, basketball and baseball.

Evie, GinnyƵs granddaughter, is in the 5th grade this year. She is on the B-teamcheer leading squad and cheers at her brother’s football games. She also plays hand bells and sings in the choir at her school. She also enjoys playing basketball. They both attend Pinewood Preparatory School in Summerville. Ginny retired from teaching in 2010 but really misses it. SheƵs even thought about going back. She took care ofher in-laws in Hartsville until theypassed away in 2012 and 2013. Then she decided to move to Summerville but visits Hartsville often for allergy shots, doctor appointments and to visit family and friends. She ishoping to make the 2020 reunion in the spring and looks forward to seeing everyone.

Myra Cato Coffeyalong with Connie White Boleman, Beth Abrams Jones, Nell Cutts Daniels, enjoyed a great week at Holden Beach in April. They missed Suzette and Lucy. This has become a yearly tradition for them followed by a fall trip to Black Mountain. Actually, there have been only a few years that they have missed getting together since leaving Coker. Then in May, Myra and three life-long friends spent 10 days in London and Paris. They enjoyed trips to Stonehenge, Bath, Windsor, Dover, Calais, Versailles, and Giverny. It was a wonderful trip! Myra is looking forward to seeing everyone at our 50th Reunion!

Jane Brown Riechmanncomments that her son Rob, his wife Tina, Jane and husband Mark visited San Francisco and Yosemite in early September. While visiting Alcatraz, Jane found Violet had been detained there because she had come back to Coker campus late (9:05 PM) from a date with a Hartsville Harry on a weeknight. She was able to ƵspringƵ Violet from Alcatraz and she accompanied them to Yosemite. They all had a wonderful time. The rest of her family (son Tim, wife Kate and daughter Nora) were supposed to accompany them on the Ƶevery other yearƵ family trip but due to the impending birth of a grandson as well as the unsure path of Hurricane Dorian, those three remained home. So their big news is the birth of that grandson, Shepherd (Shep) Kelly Riechmann, on Friday, September 20, 2019. At birth he was 8 pounds, 7 ounces and 19 inches. So far, big sister Nora does not seem too impressed! Looking forward to our 50th! Jane has her 1K saved and ready. Hope other classmates do as well. How impressive it would be to have at least 25K to donate to Coker.

Judie (Cooper) Camakhas retired after 30 years as a Financial Advisor and CFP (Certified Financial Planner), starting at A.G. Edwards and ending at Stifel. She loved every minute of it and will keep her CFP active. Now she is figuring out what she am going to do when she grows up … only thing she knows is spending time with her children and grandchildren, working puzzles, playing golf and spending time at their house at Wild Dunes … totally open to suggestions from us retirees.

Candee Constable Cravenand Scott andGayle Buckheister Sawyerand George renewed a long-established friendship to celebrate their respective 50thanniversaries with a 17-day land tour and cruise in Alaska and British Columbia, from Fairbanks to Vancouver. Traveling with two biology professors, George (botany) and Scott (wildlife) felt like two weeks in a college classroom, only better!Shrinking Violetwent, too. See the Coker eletter from August for a picture of Candee, Gayle and Violet and the Hubbard Glacier. Our most exciting event? Our hotel sustained a kitchen fire the first night of the trip and we not allowed back to our rooms or belongings for two days. Lesson learned: Take a tooth brush, phone charger and hair spray when you leave the hotel for an excursion. Sorry, Dean Mills, we did the best we could.

Linda Smith Bradford and GrayԱٱGayle Buckheister Sawyer and Georgeto sharefour days of touring transportation museums and riding historic trains with them in NC and TN. George and Linda are connoisseurs of rail history. ƵWhoƵd a thunk!Ƶ Highlights: Being with friends on a new adventure and riding in historic rail cars, pulled by old electric and steam engines through some of the most beautiful river and mountainous scenery in both states.Shrinking Violetwent, too. Look for pictures of Linda, Gayle and Violet in the next newsletter.

Where in the world is (Flat) Shrinking Violet?
Where are you going between now and our reunion? Show more than 50 years of Class of 1970 spirit and take Shrinking Violet with you! So far, Violet has been in HartsvilleƵseveral times, North Carolina–three times, Tennessee, Alaska and California. Have you scrolled through the Alumni eNewsletter articles to find Violet and your classmates on their travels?Brenda StewartƵs emails have a downloadable copy of Violet for you to put in your suitcase. The Coker Alumni website (/resources/alumni/)has a downloadable picture, as well. If you do not have a way to print a picture at home or at a drug store, email Gayle Sawyer (sawyerg@winthrop.edu) and she will snail mail an 8 x 10 picture to you for your trip.

Gayle Buckheister Sawyer receives Adjunct Faculty Award

Coker alumna Gayle Buckheister Sawyer received an award from the Richard W. Riley College of Education at Winthrop University on April 24, 2018.  Dr. Gayle Sawyer received the Adjunct Faculty Award.  This award highlights a faculty member who has demonstrated excellent teaching skills, works well with colleagues in the COE, and challenges students to do their best work.  The recipient is someone who provides plenty of academic learning time in the classroom, effective assignments, and works well with students outside the classroom as well.

For the past ten years, Gayle has worked with our M.Ed. Educational Leadership program.  She worked for us full-time for five years as a faculty member in support of a $3.75 million U.S. Department of Education School Leadership grant (called NetLEAD) as we prepared school leaders for work in high need schools.  Gayle has continued her work with us as an adjunct teaching Educational Leadership courses and supervising those students in their internships.  She has also developed and facilitated an undergraduate education core course for us that is taken by all of our teacher education candidates during their capstone Internship II experience.  That is a course that focus on school law, ethics, funding, governance and other important topics that are important to beginning teachers; and currently we use a group of school principals as the online learning facilitators of the course.

We have had a long association with Gayle beginning with her role as Executive Director of CERRA.  We are so fortunate that Gayle resides in Rock Hill and can work so closely with us.

September 7, 1948 – April 8, 2018

Patricia Jacobs Lipe, age 69, of Johns Island, South Carolina, passed away on April 8,
2018, surrounded by her family.
Patricia (ƵPatƵ) was born to the late Harold and Jacqueline Jacobs in Pensacola, Florida
on September 7, 1948.   She loved reading, cooking, travel, and time spent with family
and friends. She is survived by her husband of 36 years, Jeffrey Lipe, two children and
their spouses, Scott (Jodi) Lipe and Shannon (Dusty) McClure; three grandsons, Jaden
Lipe, Noah McClure, and Jonah McClure; her sister and brother, Janet Bex and James
Jacobs; her nephew, Jason Jacobs, her niece, Sarah Jacobs; and a large extended family.
Pat grew up in Columbia, S.C. She attended Ƶ and then the Medical
University of S.C. in Charleston, where she graduated with both B.S. and M.S. Degrees
in Microbiology. Her career allowed her to travel the world, teaching clinical and
industrial microbiology.
Pat and Jeff were married in 1982 and lived in Atlanta, Georgia until JeffƵs retirement.
Pat always hoped to return to the Lowcountry, and, in 2008, she and Jeff purchased a
beautiful plot of land on Johns Island and built a home where they could enjoy nature and
a slower pace of life.
Pat enjoyed entertaining, and her door was always open to loved ones who stopped by for
a one-hour visit or a week-long stay. Friends and family were very important to her.
She valued the friendships she developed, and she made regular plans with her family.
She had a special love for the time she spent with each of her grandsons – time spent at
the beach, cooking together, reading, dying Easter eggs, laughing at jokes, or just talking.
Pat was a loving daughter, wife, mother, sister, Nana, role model, and friend. Her
