Hello Coker Friends,

Wow红桃视频hat a year! COVID-19 has been a bummer for everyone. I hope that all of you have survived relatively unscathed. There have been so many Americans and people around the world that lost their lives, loved ones, jobs, homes, and more. I am thankful for our scientific community for developing the vaccines so quickly and hope that we will be able to get back to a new normal this summer. That means meeting up with family and friends, going to the lake, celebrating graduations, birthdays, traveling on vacations, going out to eat, attending ball games, and heading to Coker for Homecoming~can I get a high five and a Whoop Whoop!

I reached out to several classmates but didn红桃视频檛 get any news back this go round so, I will share with you some of my news. We added a new fur baby to our family in February. What a great Valentine红桃视频檚 gift to each other. Vicki and I are in love with this little fella named Teddy Bear. He is a Blue Roan and Tan colored Coker Spaniel and has been a great companion for our chocolate Poodle Truffles who lost his mojo when he lost his big sister Tooty Fruity last July. Losing Mom in December of 2019 and Tooty so close together has been really tough on us, but Teddy brightens our spirits and makes us laugh everyday with his goofy, puppy schananagans. I will be posting lots of photos on FB because he红桃视频檚 soooo adorable! I also became a great Aunt红桃视频ot that I wasn红桃视频檛 one already ;). My first born niece had a son this Spring and named him Brayden Reece. Our twin niece and nephew will be graduating HS this summer红桃视频e红桃视频檙e all getting younger红桃视频ehe. We are so proud of our youngest niece, Jessica for her hard work, drive, and dedication to academics and athletics. It has paid off royally because she will be attending the University of North Carolina in the Fall. I guess this means we are Gamecock and also Tar Heel fans红桃视频oad trips to Chapel Hill coming up红桃视频

I would love to hear from everyone from the Class of 红桃视频86. Come on and reach out to me old friends so I can write your stories in the Commentary.

Hello Coker Friends,

What a crazy year 2020 has been. I hope this finds you healthy and safe from COVID-19. I am confident that we will all come together to significantly reduce the number of infections and disastrous outcomes in the New Year. We are strong Americans that get behind each other when times are tough. I am hopeful that we will be in a position to resume games for winter sports and huddle up together at center court in 红桃视频淭he Snake Pit.红桃视频 We do have some news from three special Coker friends and here is what they have to say.

Deb Brennan-Bowers~
Check out what Deb红桃视频檚 been up to红桃视频 lived in Atlanta 32 years working in Real Estate with new home builders. I just moved back to my home town of Charleston SC in February. I have one son who is a sophomore at UGA majoring in Business. I have a new business in Kitchen and Bath Design. We do full renovation projects. I红桃视频檓 also a licensed realtor now enjoying working in the beautiful low country. It红桃视频檚 great to be back home. John and Julie Santos are here Kristin Latorre Malony and Barbie McKinnon. So love having some old friends to hang with like old times. Covid has slowed down my getting out to visit as much but I红桃视频檓 so happy things seem to be improving across the nation! So love seeing the updates on Facebook about Coker.

Dr. Karlus Artis~
Hey Trigger! Good to hear from you. I don红桃视频檛 know where to begin. After I graduated from Coker College with a degree in Chemistry I went to Medical School at East Carolina University in Greenville, North Carolina. I got married my last year in Medical School in 1989. I graduated medical school in 1990 with a degree, Doctor of Medicine. I then started my residency at Duke University in Family Medicine. I received my license and started medical practice in Goldsboro North Carolina. My wife and I had two boys; Kyle and Karlon. I practiced medicine in Goldsboro for several years then I moved to Rocky Mount, North Carolina where I live now. I remarried in 2012 and practiced as an Emergency Room physician and Hospitalist for ten years. I know practice medicine in Roanoke Rapids and Goldsboro North Carolina. I have been practicing medicine now for 29 years with plans too slowly retire soon.

Begonia Fabregus~
I had to do some detective work to find Begoniaaaaaa in Spain and was thrilled to hear back from her. I reminded her of a funny story from back when we were at Coker in 1986. One hot afternoon she came up to me and said红桃视频rigger, will you take me to the Sonic to get a Slime Lush (Lime Slush)红桃视频 😂 I call it Slime Lush to this day, and so does my family. How adorable! I love that story of my Spanish friend who came to America to play tennis and was learning to speak English.

So红桃视频njoy her story.
Hey Hey Trigger!!!聽How incredible it is to hear from you after so many years!!! I am a little bit in shock, but very glad to hear from you!!聽As you have seen I am not in FB or any other social network, sorry…聽😊聽 and let me tell you that I had to read the message twice because I had to understand what聽furry children meant!!! So you can see that after many years I am still learning English,聽it has been so sweet to read about the Slime Lush聽😊

Sorry to hear that it has been a rough year, I am sorry for the loss of your mother.

Well, let me summarize my last 35 years as good as you have done in a few lines… I am doing fine, still working as you have seen involved in tennis but very eager to retire, how lucky you are!

I worked in so many places…all very different聽😝聽with photographers, on tv, in hotels, at a US pharmaceutical company, and many others, not in that order, but buff! it has been ok, not to launch fireworks but good. I have travelled a lot, but not as much聽as I would have liked. I hope to travel again after the COVID disappears.聽 I am single and living with my parents, they are very well, but 89 and 85 so they need my help. I have moved from the city of Barcelona to a small town at the beach, so I am very excited to live just by the sea. It is not like Myrtle beach, but it is a beach. My sister lives here too so we manage together.

I would love to go back to the US. I went only twice in all those years and the last time was in 1997!!!!

Let me think about anything curious to tell regarding these years so you can write in the Commentary. If not you can also tell that you have been a great detective and that you should have tried to be a professional聽one because you found me聽😊

It has been so nice to hear from you, really, how great after all these years.

We will be in contact, I will look for a nice picture of me to send you next time I write and you will see if you recognize me 馃檪 馃檪 馃檪

Coker friends红桃视频ant to hear your stories so please don红桃视频檛 hesitate to get in touch with me. Looking forward to sharing more life adventures about you. Write to me soon!

Hello Coker Friends,

Alumni weekend was special this year for Lynn Owens-Watts, Lisa Johnson-Ard, Lisa “Flea” Bruorton-Jones, Tina Blackmon-Morton, Lisha Morant and yours truly. We had the distinct honor of being selected to the Coker Women’s Basketball All-Time Team. There are six players on the 1st Team, six players on the 2nd Team, and 11 players on the Honorable Mention Team. I had the pleasure of lacing up my sneakers and donning a jersey with five of those extraordinary Cobras during my two years at Coker. That’s right…there are six “Ladies from the 80’s” out of the twenty-three players on the All-Time Team. A big thank you to our beloved families and friends who were at “The Snake Pit” to help us celebrate and sending hugs for those of you who flooded Facebook for days with heart felt congratulation wishes. In attendance as always, was our much loved Cobra Godfather, Coach Terry. Dewey Norris made a long road trip from Pittsburg to be with us joined by fellow Cobras, Kenneth “Sun Bear” Broom, Ricky Blanks, Michele “SID” Johnson, Kathy Harsh-Cunningham, Helen Mason-Allen, and Pat Brooks.

I would like to give a shout-out to Gina “Coop” Cooper, who was a solid player herself, for starting her future coaching career by recruiting two future two time Basketball All-Americans, myself and “Flea”. She was instrumental in bringing many athletes to Coker with her charismatic, fun-loving personality. Bobbi Brumble-Zimmerman was also a valued and loved teammate who is now a high school girls basketball coach in Columbia and was influential in bringing on board another super-star, Lisha Morant. Lynn Owens-Watts is a homegrown fierce rebounding “fear the fang” fighting machine who was destined to shine at Coker and what a lucky catch for the Cobras. The leader of our pack, Coach Susan Blakely was the engine behind our success. She recruited many good players in her tenure but she had an especially great day when she signed two hot-shots, all around standout Lisa Johnson and quick as lightning, Tina Blackmon. So proud of all of these ladies. I can hear the Bell Tower ringing. Congrats once again Lady Cobras, our blood runneth Blue and Gold…sssssssssss.

We want to know what everyone of you has been doing for the last 30 years. So come on Cobras talk to me红桃视频

Cheers Coker friends, It was so good to see many of you at Homecoming this past February at the beautiful DeLoach Center.  I really loved catching up with everyone during the men and women红桃视频檚 basketball games.  The only problem was that I红桃视频檓 so busy talking and laughing that I missed most of the games.  The athletes today are so lucky to be able to play and train in such a great new state of the art athletic facility, but I still love the old hardwood floors in the Timberlake-Lawton gymnasium.  I didn红桃视频檛 see any of my classmates at the game but I did see a few from various other 80红桃视频檚 classes. So红桃视频ere are their stories. Hope you enjoy them.

Pennie Cathey Peagler 红桃视频89红桃视频擫ook who just joined the Big 5-0 Club along with many of our Coker friends.  We are now all much wiser and wealthier than we were back in the 80红桃视频檚 living in the dorms on College Ave.  Pennie has passed on her love for Coker by encouraging her oldest son to become a student at our beloved college in Hartsville while her middle son got her athletic gene and is the starting goalkeeper on his high school JV soccer team.  Her youngest daughter wants to slide into her Mom红桃视频檚 kneepads and try out for her schools volleyball team.  Ernie and Pennie are celebrating 26 years of marriage and they love to snow ski and RV when she can break away from being a part time soccer and volleyball Mom.

Stephen B. Curl 红桃视频88红桃视频擨 haven红桃视频檛 seen Curl since graduation in 红桃视频86.  Good to see him and find out about his life.  He and Debbie have been married for 27 years and live in Cummings, GA. where he is a manager at Kroger.  They have a son and daughter and when not working he spends time with family and likes to hunt.  Curl still laces up his sneaks and hits the hardwood once in a while for old times sake then pays the price as we all do.  Ice红桃视频ce红桃视频aby! J

Stephen A. Schulte 红桃视频88红桃视频擲chulte and Mariamne have 2 daughters.  Their youngest is a chip off the old block and can shoot just like her dad红桃视频aybe even better.  She wears the #22 jersey for Tulane University and will be a returning junior.  Schulte is also very proud of their oldest daughter who just got back from teaching in Thailand.  Stephen is the co-owner of ProCare Prosthetics and Orthotics and lives in Braselton, GA.

Darrin Hayes 红桃视频89红桃视频擠arrin红桃视频檚 always posting great photos of their latest exciting adventures 4-wheeling, boating, riding Harley红桃视频檚 and traveling in their fifth wheel with their best friends, their son and daughter in-law.  As if that红桃视频檚 not enough to keep him busy he also loves to play golf and go to concerts.

Lisa Johnson Ard 红桃视频88红桃视频擫isa is a teacher and coach.  She coaches middle school basketball and high school softball at East Clarendon.  She and Ike celebrated 27 years of marriage and she is a proud Mama of two sons that share her love of sports.  Her oldest son is a recent USC-Aiken graduate that was a catcher for the Pacers. Her baby boy wanted to be like his big brother and carry on the baseball dynasty at USCA as a pitcher.

Tina Blackmon Morton 红桃视频89红桃视频擳ina and Jim have been married for 19 years and are the proud parents of a kitty cat and two labs named Katy and Savannah.  She is an animal and nature lover, like myself, and lives in Western North Carolina.  She红桃视频檚 a mountain girl that loves her daily 4-mile hikes with her labs in sunny or snowy weather.  I bet Katy and Savannah have to hustle to keep up with Tina.  She was always first running suicides in basketball practice.  Wow, she is a rocket.  Its红桃视频 a thrill to spend time with her at Homecoming and get one of her bear hugs.  She will squeeze the breath out of you J

Kathy Harsh Cunningham 红桃视频90红桃视频擪athy and her family are doing well and she still laughs at everything.  She and her husband have been married for 23 years and have one son, Ben.  They live in Georgetown where she owns her own medical transcriptionist business and with her free time she is with family and friends.  We all love to see Kathy at Homecoming because she is so sweet, happy and loves her Coker buddies.  She especially loves trouble making with one of her BFF红桃视频檚, Helen Mason Allen 红桃视频91.  Helen is living in Charlotte but will take a road trip to Hartsville anytime to see her Coker friends.  She is married and has a daughter that is a swimmer for the University of Tennessee. She is a proud Mama sporting Tennessee orange while cheering for her daughter.

Lisa 红桃视频淔lea红桃视频 Bruorton Jones 红桃视频88红桃视频擣lea spends her time teaching at South Florence H.S. and spending time with family and friends.  She loves cheering for the Clemson Tigers and playing in a 4.0 tennis league.  Her team won the 2016 state championship, and I红桃视频檝e heard she is really good. She and Bobby have been married for 27 years and travel a good bit when they can get a pet sitter for their 3 furry children.

Kenny Nance 红桃视频88红桃视频擪enny is the matrimony record holder.  He and his wife have two children and have been married for 29 years.  They live in Cordele, GA. where he is the proud CEO at Kent Nance State Farm agency.  He credits his success to his Coker education and sends a shout out to Ed Quilty and Dr. Bill Burnett.  Kenny is very active in his community as a mentor teaching financial literacy to the local elementary school kids, and he uses the basketball skills he perfected at Coker to run a summer basketball camp.  When he has time left in his busy schedule he enjoys playing golf and he said, 红桃视频渉e红桃视频檚 living the dream红桃视频.

Hello Coker Friends,

Warmer weather is approaching and I am remembering how beautiful our campus is with all the flowers blooming during the Spring. Basketball season is over but we still had lots of fun things to do and see before summer break. Let’s reminisce about the Music, Theater and Dance Performances, Spring Sports, May Day, the Boat House and Crew Races, Final Exams, and finally wishing our friends farewell and good luck with their lives and careers on Graduation Day!

I recently heard from June “June Bug” Beasley. Let’s congratulate her on her retirement in 2015 from a rewarding career in the South Carolina Adult and Juvenile Criminal Justice System. So glad to hear from “June Bug” and to discover where life has taken her.

Here is her story…In May 2015, I retired from the South Carolina Department of Juvenile Justice after serving as a master level social worker V. The majority of my career was in the criminal justice system before transitioning into a hospital setting serving pediatric and adult HIV/AIDS clients. During my career I also focused on the juvenile justice system in an attempt to reach younger offenders from re-offending. I worked in two maximum security units before transferring to the community division where I networked with alternative schools providing service for elementary to high school students and at-risk teens.

I then transitioned back behind the fence at DJJ as a crisis intervention social worker and after a brief promotion as a unit manager I decided to retire with police officer and state retirement benefits.

After retiring I relocated to Athens Georgia and am active in my local Presbyterian Church and enjoy recreational events. However, I remain a loyal Clemson Tiger fan! My hope is to make an impact with at-risk youth through my church’s Downtown Academy in the near future. I want to be a mentor and serve as an assistant coach in various sports.

It was great hearing from you “June Bug” and thank you for your social work within our Criminal Justice System to save our youth and make South Carolina a safer place to live.

So…come on Coker friends. Let me hear from you so I can share your stories too…
