Mrs. Angela “Angie” C. Thurman, age 50, entered into rest on Saturday, January 6, 2024. A Celebration of Life Service will be held at 6:00 PM on Thursday, January 11, 2024 from the Chapel of Miller-Rivers-Caulder Funeral Home. The Reverend Ronald Thurman and Brent Taylor will officiate the service. Prior to the service, the family will receive friends from 5:00 – 6:00 PM at the funeral home, and then immediately following the service.

Mrs. Thurman was born on August 3, 1973 in Chesterfield, SC a daughter of Perry Crowley and Ann Gulledge Gainey. Angie graduated from Chesterfield High School in 1991 and went on to complete her Bachelor of Arts in History at Coker College. She furthered her education by obtaining her Masters of Education from the University of South Carolina.

Angie had a passion for teaching and started her career as an educator teaching second grade and special education at Morven Elementary. Later on, she taught special education at Chesterfield – Ruby Middle School. In addition to her teaching career, Angie served with dedication for over 16 years as a Victim’s Service Provider, Violent Crime Paralegal, and Case Manager for the Fourth Judicial Circuit Solicitor’s Office. Despite her demanding work schedule, Angie also found time to teach early childhood education classes both online and in the evenings at Northeastern Technical College.

Throughout her life, Angie supported her husband’s coaching career wholeheartedly and cherished their two daughters and beloved granddaughter Madalyn dearly. Angie treasured time spent with her family attending Ruby Baptist Church.

In addition to spending quality time with loved ones, Angie found joy in making memories during family trips to the beach. She also enjoyed indulging in her hobbies, including shopping and getting her nails done. Furthermore, Angie was an avid fan of USC Gamecocks football.

Angie will be remembered as a lady who deeply loved her family, work family, and friends. Her warm and caring nature touched the lives of those fortunate enough to have known her.

In addition to her parents, Mrs. Thurman was also preceded in death by her step-father, Gladd Gainey Jr.

Surviving Angie is her husband Kevin Thurman, with whom she shared nearly 30 years of marriage. She is also survived by her daughters Mary-Kaitlin Thurman (Blake Jacobs) and Leah Thurman (Clayton) Hurst, both reside in Chesterfield, SC. Additionally, Angie leaves behind a precious granddaughter named Madalyn Hurst. She is also survived by her sister Melinda Crawley of Chesterfield, SC; niece Brittany (Chase) Winstead of Cheraw, SC; nephew John Michael Crawley of Chesterfield, SC; aunts Sallie Crowley of Surfside Beach, SC, Carolyn (Travis) Outlaw of Cheraw SC, and JoAnn Teal of Chesterfield SC; a host of extended family members, cherished friends, as well as her close-knit work family at the Solicitor’s Office.

Obituary
Command Sergeant Major (R) Russel Anderson, affectionately known as “Sergeant Smoke” was born January 29, 1938 in Coffeeville, MS. He transitioned on the afternoon of February 18, 2023 in Columbia, SC with his loving wife by his side. He was the son of parents, Lucious Anderson and Zenora Jackson Anderson. Russel was the fifth born of eight siblings.

CSM Anderson was educated in the public school system in Senatobia, MS and graduated from Senatobia Colored High School Class of 1956. In 1995, he received his Bachelor of Science Degree from 红桃视频. Russel is a graduate of the U.S. Army Sergeant Major’s Academy Class 5, the U.S. Army Drill Sergeant School, the Noncommissioned Officer School and several other
Military Schools.

CSM Anderson enlisted in the U.S. Army in July 1958 in Memphis, TN. He completed Basic and Advanced Individual Training as a Combat Engineer, Fort Leonard Wood, MO. Soon thereafter he transitioned into the Infantry.

CSM Anderson was born to be a soldier and a leader. His ability to lead effectively was recognized early in his career and he was able to advance quickly through the ranks to the highest enlisted grade of Command Sergeant Major.

CSM Anderson was a highly decorated American Soldier whose awards included the Silver Star, (American’s third highest military combat decoration), The Purple Heart, Distinguished Service Medal, Legion of Merit, the Bronze Star with “V” device, Army Achievement Medal, Meritorious Service Medal with Oak Leaf Clusters, the Combat Infantryman Badge, the National Defense Service Medal and the Vietnam Service Medal and numerous certificates of achievements.

CSM Anderson served as Squad Leader, Platoon Sergeant, First Sergeant and Command Sergeant Major. He served as Command Sergeant Major, 3 rd Battalion, 84 th Field Artillery, (Pershing) 9 th Infantry Division, 3 rd Battalion, 7 th Infantry Regiment; 3 rd Infantry Division, 1 st Battalion, 30 th Infantry Regiment; and Brigade Command Sergeant Major for the 1 st Brigade, 3 rd Infantry Division, CSM Anderson was one of seven Sergeants Major’s to command the Noncommissioned Officer School of Infantry, Fort Benning, GA. He served two combat tours in the Republic of Vietnam, Several tours in Germany, South Korea, and at several locations in the Continental United States. His last assignment was Fort Jackson, SC, where he served as Post Sergeant Major until retirement in January 1993.

Russel, was always a strong advocate for Community Service. After retiring from the Military, he became an original member and First Chairman of Richland County Sherriff Department’s Citizen’s Advisory Board, President of the U.S Military Retiree Association, President of Association of U.S. Army (AUSA), Fort Jackson-Palmetto Chapter, Elected to the Hall of Fame, Member of National
Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP), Junior Reserve Officer Training Corp, (JROTC) Instructor Batesville 红桃视频 Leesville High School.

Russel accepted Christ at an early age and was baptized at Hammond Hill Baptist Church in Senatobia, MS. He was known as one who always spoke firmly and intelligently, debated energetically, cared dearly about his family, friends, soldiers and community. He possessed superior listening skills and was always available for counsel to those in need. Russel was preceded in death by his parents, Brothers Lucious Anderson, Jr., Linwood Anderson and James H. Anderson, his daughter, DeAngela Anderson and his son, Russel Duanell Anderson. Left to cherish his fond memories: his loving wife Mildred “Millie” Anderson, and his Stepson William ‘Keith” (Peggy) Belt, Columbia, SC, his grandchildren Melanie, Jaylen, and Todd Anderson, Damarcus Williams, and a host of loving relatives and friends.

As we salute and bid our Soldier farewell, we wish to borrow a quote from an old Soldier, General Douglas MacArthur who during his farewell speech to the Nation and the Corp said “Old soldiers never die–they just fade away.’ So we bid CSM “Smoke” a final good bye and grant him permission to just–fade away.

Carl Randolph Carraway, Sr., 75, husband of Shirley Spring Carraway, died Sunday, May 3, 2020, at his residence. Mr. Carraway was born on December 20, 1944, son of the late George N. Carraway and Clara Bell Locklair Carraway.

Mr. Carraway graduated from J.C. Lynch High School and received a Bachelor of Business Degree from聽Coker College. Carl was a member of Barrineau Pentecostal Holiness Church and retired from Baxter Laboratories of Kingstree. Carl served in the SC Army National Guard, retiring after 26 years of service, with the rank of Staff Sergeant. He served in Desert Storm with the 1052nd Transportation Unit of Kingstree. He was a life member of the Disabled American Veterans, DAV and VFW. He was a devoted husband, father, PaPa and friend. He loved spending time with his grandchildren and working in his shop.

Surviving are his wife, Shirley Spring Carraway of Lake City; sons, Carl “Rance” (Melissa) Carraway, Jr. of Lake City and Shawn Ashby Carraway of Florence; daughter, Nicole Carraway (Tony) Floyd of Columbia; grandchildren, Alex Floyd, Lauren Floyd of Columbia, Shay Carraway of Florence and Joshua (Hannah) Welch of Lake City; great grandchildren; Levi Welch of Lake City; brothers, Steve Carraway of Florence, James (Jeanette) Carraway and George “Billy” (Mary) Carraway, both of Coward; and a sister Gladys (J. L.) Allen of Coward.

The family will receive friends from 12 noon 2:00 PM, Tuesday, May 5, 2020, at Barrineau Pentecostal Holiness Church, with Funeral services to follow at 2:00 PM. Burial with full military honors to follow at Barrineau Pentecostal Holiness Church Cemetery. Due to Covid-19, social distancing will be observed at the visitation and funeral. Brooks Shumake inducted in the Sumter Sports Hall of Fame

Lisa Johnson Ard, Connie Ballard, the late Buddy Hodge, Garon Jackson, Stacy Martin,聽Brooks Shumake聽and Travis Yates have been selected for induction into the Sumter Sports Hall of Fame.

The induction ceremony will be held on Thursday, Nov. 16, at the Salvation Army Boys & Girls Club of Sumter at 630 South Sumter Street.

Ard was a standout athlete at both Hudgens Academy and 红桃视频 before becoming a standout high school coach in both basketball and softball. Ard was the girls basketball head coach at Crestwood from 1998-2006 and led the Lady Wildcats to the state playoffs each year, winning four region titles. She has led East Clarendon High School to two 1A softball state titles – 2013 and ’17.

Ballard was a standout amateur golfer, winning two South Carolina Women’s Open Golf Chamionships. The first came in a match play format in 1986 while the other came the following year in stroke play.

Hodge was a 1943 graduate of Edmunds High School where he lettered in both basketball and football. He went to Wheaton University for a year where he was a member of an undefeated football. After serving in the Navy in World War II, Hodge went to Newberry College and lettered in four sports. He went on to become a high school coach and athletic director and later was both a basketball and football official.

Jackson was an all-state distance runner for the Sumter High School track and field team and then went on to a tremendous career at Voorhees College. Jackson won state championships in both the 800- and 1,600-meter runs in 1995. He went to Voorhees and is the only undefeated track and field athlete in Eastern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference history.

Martin was the varsity head coach for both the boys and girls track and field teams at Wilson Hall for 13 years. She won 12 SCISA 3A state titles during that time, six with the boys and six with the girls. She was also named SCISA Coach of the Year 10 times.

Shumake has won three state championships as the baseball head coach at Sumter High School. He’s won eight region titles and seven district titles while sporting a 358-168 record in his 18 years at SHS.

Yates was a standout football player at Hillcrest High and went on to play at Wofford College. He was an honorable mention All-American at Wofford.

Athletics Hall of Fame – April 24, 2001

Elizabeth 红桃视频淟iz红桃视频 Clack-Freeman graduated from 红桃视频 in 1995 with a political science degree. She continued her studies at Baylor University School of Law and graduated from there in 1998 at the top of her class and in the top 10% of all Baylor graduates.

A softball stand-out and team captain while she was t Coker, clack-Freeman pitched 82 victories and tallied only 15 losses, putting her No. 2 on the career all-time win list with a .845 winning percentage. Her career 1.80 ERA is No. 3 on Coker红桃视频檚 all time list. The softball team红桃视频檚 four-year record under Clock-Freeman was 145 wins and just 31 losses. Each year of her college career, from 1992-1995, Clack-Freeman was named to the All-conference Team. She was also named Conference Player of the Year and Regional Tournament Player of the Year in 1992.

In 1993, she received All-American honors and in 1995, the NCAA selected her Woman of the Year for South Carolina. In 1994 and 1995, Clack-Freeman won 红桃视频红桃视频檚 C.G. Timberlake Athlete of the Year Award and the Murphy Osborne Scholar-Athlete Award from the Caronlinas Virginia Athletic Conference. While at Coker, Clack-Freeman was a member of the Board of Trustees. She was also a volunteer math tutor in the Hartsville community.

Athletics Hall of Fame – April 27, 2005

Crystal McCamis Schubert, a 1995 graduate of 红桃视频 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Exercise Science, was a four-year standout on the women红桃视频檚 soccer team. Nearly 10 years after her graduation, Schubert still holds Coker红桃视频檚 all-time records for points with 137 and assists with 35. She is also second all-time in career goals with 51 and is also second in single-season goals with 15. Schubert was a two-time All-American in 1993 and 1994 and earned Coker Athlete of the Year honors in 1994.

During her career, the Cobras finished with the two best season finishes in school history at 14-2-2 and ranked 4th聽nationally, and a 15-1-1 season with a final ranking of the 17th聽in the country. The team also won a pair of conference championships and made one appearance at the regional. While a student, she was a Coker ambassador and was an active participant in campus life.

Since graduation, Schubert has been heavily involved in coaching the game. She was an assistant coach at Campbell University for three season, coached high school soccer for two years, and has been involved in youth recreational soccer programs for over nine years.
