Outstanding Young Alumni Award 2016

Kenneth P. Lewis, Ƶ class of 2001, has been named the 2016 recipient of the Ƶ Outstanding Young Alumni Award. This prestigious award is given annually by the Ƶ Alumni Association. It is presented to a graduate of the past 20 years who has already made significant achievements in his or her chosen profession and who shows exceptional potential for future accomplishments.

Lewis graduated with a B.S. in medical technology from Ƶ and McLeod Regional Hospital School of Medical Technology. He continued his education and received a Master of Public Health from Florida International University. Currently, Lewis works as a senior immunology technical consultant with Alere Inc., a global diagnostic device and service provider. He is also the Owner of KPL Consulting, where he works with laboratory management, quality assurance, regulatory compliance and training. In addition, he is currently attending Andersonville Theological Seminary.

ƵKennethƵs achievementsƵacademically and professionallyƵsince his time at Coker made him a clear choice as our Outstanding Young Alumnus for 2016,Ƶ said Carol Atkinson, president of the Ƶ Alumni Association. ƵWe look forward to following KennethƵs future achievements.Ƶ

Prior to his current position with Alere, Lewis served as a medical technologist at several medical centers. He has also served on the South Carolina HIV/STD Conference Planning Committee and the South Carolina HIV/AIDS Council, and is active in his church. He has certifications as a Six Sigma Black Belt Professional and as a Change Management Specialist. He resides in Pageland, SC, with his wife, Joanna.

Kenneth Lewis is the new Director of Laboratory Services at Carolinas Hospital System.

Carolinas Hospital System announced three new additions to the facilityƵs leadership team on Monday, Sept. 18.

Lewis has more than 16 years of experience in laboratory sciences and management. He received his Bachelors of Science in Medical Technology from Ƶ and his Masters of Public Health from Florida International University. Prior to joining Carolinas Hospital System, Lewis served as Senior Technical Consultant for Alere, a leader in rapid diagnostics, in Princeton, New Jersey.

Sympathy is extended to Alice in the death of her husband James “Rudy” Catoe

James Rudolph Catoe, affectionately known as Rudy, 72, passed away on September 16.

Funeral services will be held at the Hartsville First Church of the Nazarene on Tuesday at 3:00. The family will have visitation at the church one hour prior to the funeral. Reverend John Griggs and Reverend Brian Enlow will officiate. Burial will be in the Magnolia Cemetery.

Mr. Catoe was born in Hartsville. He was the son of the late Rudolph and Constance Sumner Catoe. He was retired from Sonoco Products Company after 50 years of service. He traveled extensively for many years with the company. Mr. Catoe served as president of the Hartsville Dixie Boys Baseball Program for many years. He was also a Mason. He was a kind, faithful man that enjoyed adventure, but found his greatest pleasure spending time with his family and friends.

Surviving are his wife Alice Walters Catoe of 52 years, one son Michael Catoe of McBee, and one daughter, Kelley (Brandon) Sick of Rock Hill; seven grandchildren, Mikayla Catoe, Canton Catoe, Landon Catoe, Kennedy Catoe, Trace Catoe, Sumner Sick, and Loren Sick; one great-grandchild, Kayson Catoe; two sisters, Gayle (Johnny) Russ and Wanda (Tommy) Johnson, both of Hartsville. He was preceded in death by his son Jamie Catoe and one brother, Randy Catoe.

Memorials may be made to Hartsville First Church of the Nazarene at 1909 West Bobo Newsom Highway, Hartsville, SC 29550 and Lake Robinson Baptist Church at 2308 Lake Robinson Circle, Hartsville, SC 29550.

Norton Funeral Home of Hartsville is honored to be serving the Catoe family.
