Louise Rivers Matthews passed into heaven on January 22, 2024, surrounded by her three sons and her daughter-in-law. Louise was born Virginia Louise Rivers on December 11, 1927 in Hartsville, SC to Ruby DuBose Rivers and James U. (Bill) Rivers. Her love of family was epitomized throughout her life from caring for her parents to her ever-present desire to be involved in her 6 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren红桃视频檚 lives and activities, when possible. 聽Louise lived a very full life full of adventures with her husband, George E. Matthews, Sr. Married for 72 years, they met while George was staying at a boarding house run by her grandparents and she was attending nearby Coker College. Their young love was strong and they wanted to get married as soon as possible, but Louise made a promise to her parents that they would wait until after she graduated college. Promises are promises and she kept that promise, but by only an hour! They drove directly from graduation straight to their wedding ceremony. Their love was one for the ages and it only grew stronger over their years together. 聽Louise began her long teaching career at that time. She taught elementary school in McColl, SC, Bennettsville, SC, and Mt. Croghan, SC before moving to Wadesboro, where she taught elementary, middle, and high school. 聽She always worked diligently with her students to bring out their very best and always looked for ways to make learning a positive experience. She was known for rearranging desks to keep her students on their toes and even brought in her rug to make for a more 红桃视频渉omey红桃视频 atmosphere.

红桃视频淢s. Louise红桃视频 was widely recognized for her excellence in teaching and was selected to 红桃视频淲ho红桃视频檚 Who in American Teachers红桃视频. Among her most rewarding teaching experiences was her time at J.R. Faison on Salisbury Street, serving under Principal John R. Marable and with co-teacher Ms. Vivian Price. This was the first year that Anson County schools were fully integrated, and she was in the first group of white teachers at the school. Times have changed so much in the County and she will always be grateful for having the opportunity to help different communities of students come together positively.

A lifelong learner, Louise embraced new technologies that would allow her to stay connected with family while also staying abreast of current events throughout the world. She would learn all of the latest technological gadgets and online tools to keep her connected to things and people she loved. She kept up with news and politics on her tablet and smartphone. She monitored downtown Wadesboro activities through her five security cameras. When anyone in her family聽flew, she tracked their plane en route with the FlightAware app. She texted daily with children, grandchildren, and even great-grandchildren. She even solved the New York Times online Wordle puzzle each morning before breakfast. When technology problems popped up, more often than not she would troubleshoot them herself, using Google, YouTube, or her own wits.

Louise also loved expressing herself through art. Whether it was through watercolor paintings of various nature scenes or various pieces of poetry, she sought to express the beauty of God红桃视频檚 creation and the human experience. A poem about a lone soldier during the Gulf War earned recognition in a local poetry contest. She encouraged others to explore their creativity while teaching her students to embrace all of what an education could offer.

There will be a private service for her family to reminisce and celebrate her life.

Her family extends their deepest appreciation to all those in Wadesboro who made it possible for her to live independently until two weeks before her death. We especially thank Gaye and Matt Harrington, Steve Bailey, Oliver红桃视频檚 Restaurant, Ansonia Soup Company, Aaron Shaver of Parsons Drug Company, and Dr. Michael Lincoln who understood her needs and her desire to move furniture.

Louise is survived by their three sons and their families: Rick and his wife Carolyn of Winston-Salem, their children Mark (Florence) and their children, 聽Eleanor and James; Kelly Matthews Silliman (Shawn) and their children, Wyatt and McKinley; Mike 聽Matthews of Richmond, VA and his daughters Molly Matthews-Ewald (Chris) and their daughter, Jocelyn; and Aline Matthews; Kip Matthews and his wife Kimberly of Athens, GA, their children Patrick and Schuyler.

Memorial gifts may be made to Mount Croghan Methodist Church, PO Box 26, Mt. Croghan, SC 29727, The First United Methodist Church, 118 E. Morgan Street, Wadesboro, NC 聽28170-2202, or Trellis Supportive Care, 101 Hospice Lane, Winston Salem, NC 聽27103.

She has now been received by God who brought her into the world, the God who journeyed with her in life and faith, and the God who has now welcomed her home in death. May she rest in peace and rise in glory.

Constance “Connie” Kearse Flexer DANIEL ISLAND – Constance Kearse Flexer, age 99, joined our Lord on June 15, 2025. She was part of the Greatest Generation – of which, as of 2024, there are fewer than 66,000 left in the entire U.S. She lived through the Great Depression, WWII, the Attack on Pearl Harbor, D-Day, the Battle of Iwo Jima, the Korean War, the Bay of Pigs, the Vietnam War, the Covid 19 Global Pandemic and more. She would have turned 100 years old on September 10th of this year. Her parents, Henry Homer and Bessie Mae Kearse of Olar, SC, owned an expansive South Carolina farm with dairy, cattle, crops and trees. Louise Kearse, the oldest of 3 siblings, left home for college literally the day Connie was born leaving behind a brother and newborn sister. Connie graduated from Olar High School in 1943 and attended Coker College (now University) in Hartsville, SC. Her time at Coker was nothing shy of vibrant. She began her freshman year as a Music Major and became active on the Field Hockey Team. Her sophomore year, she joined the Christian Association and Music Club, while thriving on the Field Hockey Team. Her junior year was even more eventful as she added Varsity Basketball and became an active participant within Sigma Tau Delta – Coker’s English sorority; Alpha Psi Omega – Coker’s Dramatic Fraternity; and the Queen Bess Players – an – amateur theater club. Throughout her senior year, she remained actively committed to the same teams and organizations and was elected President of the Music Club. She graduated Class of 1946 with a double major in music and education. Following Graduation, she relocated to Brunswick, GA, to teach 3rd grade. It was there she met Major Winebert Flexer II, a decorated Army Air Corps Veteran fresh back from WWII, on a double date. Little did she know the acceptance of this new job would also lead to meeting her future husband and raising a family on the Georgia Coast. Connie and Winebert married in August of 1948. They moved to Athens, GA, & Connie taught school and piano lessons while Dan attended the University of Georgia Law School, graduating in 1950. Soon after, they returned to Glynn County where he became a local practicing attorney and she taught 4th grade. Dan was elected to the State House of Representatives in 1961 and resigned a year after being appointed to the post of Superior Court Judge of the Brunswick Judicial District. Connie continued teaching Kindergarten at First Baptist Church of Brunswick and for 22 years, played the supportive role of “a Judges wife”. As a tribute to Dan after his death in 1985, she began a longstanding annual tradition of playing a piano solo of Jesus Loves Me, Clair De Lune during the Sunday church service where they had been faithful members since 1951. Above all, Connie so valued time with her family, church and girlfriends. She was spontaneous, somewhat adventurous and loved to travel. She thoroughly enjoyed local theatrical plays, concerts, playing Bridge and was an original member of the St. Simon’s Island Cherokee Garden Club. She was a long-standing member of the ladies handbell choir and Christian Women’s Club at First Baptist Church. Connie and Dan were founding members of Sea Island and the Brunswick Country Club. Many wonderful memories include time spent together at the Beach Club during summers and the Fourth of July Holiday. Together we all enjoyed many a sunset at the Sea Island Lodge while listening to the bagpiper play. Connie is survived by her son, Winebert “Bert” Flexer III (Gail); daughter, Susan Elizabeth Libby Smith (Steve); her grandchildren, Jean Marie Richardson (Hap), Allison Hughes (Vince), Claire Flexer, Brittany Roberts (Adam) and Sullivan “Sully” Smith. She is predeceased by her husband, Judge Winebert Dan Flexer II and son, Jim Flexer. Her funeral will be held at First Baptist Church of Brunswick on Monday, June 30th, at 2pm with Reverend Jim Crandall officiating. Burial will follow at Palmetto Cemetery with an informal visitation with family and friends afterwards. In Connie’s honor, memorials may be made to First Baptist Church Brunswick, Georgia. The extended family will be gathering at Lake Murray in September for a Celebration of Life in recognition of what would have been her 100th birthday. Libby and Bert would like to say a special thanks to the extraordinary caregivers known as “Team Connie” who loved and assisted with caring for her in our Daniel Island, SC, home over the past several years. And to Reverand Jim Crandall, Tommy McMillan, Ann Dempsey and Sandra Brunson we extend our heartfelt appreciation for helping us remember when . . .

Barbara Folger Ballentine Stuckey, age 95, wife of 74 years to James (Jim) Fountain Stuckey, went to Heaven on Tuesday, October 24, 2023. Born on April 21, 1928, she was the daughter of the late James Anderson Ballentine and the late Gladys Folger Higgins Ballentine.

Barbara’s intense and life long love of teaching, guiding, instructing, and participating led her into many directions. Following graduation from Coker college, she taught piano for 12 years, accompanied church choirs, and organized and directed the Easley Presbyterian church Bell Ringers. She also spent 7 years teaching Math (with a preference for Algebra) and then felt led to go into Guidance counseling at Easley High School, which she did for 23 years. During this time, she also finished a Master’s Degree from Clemson University and then, with a friend, opened a Cross Stitch Shop on the backside of the family’s “Ballentine Hardware Store.” She loved making beautiful cross stitch art and teaching it to everyone. She also enjoyed a good game of Bridge or Hand and Foot with friends and family. Her connections to students, friends, and everyone was sincere and long lived. She delighted in visiting people and sharing home-grown flowers and homemade Benne Seed Cookies and Banana Bread.

A member of Easley Presbyterian church, she served as organist and director of the Hand Bell Choir. As a summer resident of the Cedar Mountain Community in North Carolina, she was the organist for Faith Memorial Chapel’s summer services. In her later years she enjoyed accompanying her many musical grandchildren and the Seniors Choir at Easley First Baptist Church. And, finally, since moving to Easley Presbyterian Home, she regularly provided music for Sunday Vespers.

Barbara or “Mimi” is missed and survived by a large family and special friends headed by her beloved husband, Jim. She was a devoted Mother to two sons; James “Jim” Ballentine Stuckey Sr., who resides in Easley with his wife Nannette (Nan); and William “Bill” Carson Stuckey, who lives in Hendersonville, NC with his wife Catherine (Cathy). Mimi’s nurturing spirit extended to her role as a grandmother to twelve grandchildren; JB (Kelli), Frank, Alicia (Jason), Carson (Paige), Jarrett (Deceased) (Kasey), Christina (Jesse), Julianna (Richard), Katie, Margaret, Will (Emily), Alex, and Benjamin; and also to twenty-one great-grandchildren: Taylor, Caroline, Wyatt, Kaylee, Jace, Nadia, Cooper, Mila, Aria, Tatum, Ellie, Asher, Iain, Jude, Isaac, Mark, Paul, Ivy, Malachi, Samantha, and Joanna. As Aunt Barbara she maintained strong, unbroken relationships with her remaining nieces and nephews: Rhett, Ted, Lucy Allene, Frank, Rena, Lucy, Chandler, and Becky. She will also be missed by special friends Judy Bonham and Julie Jameson.
