Lisa Johnson Ard inducted into the Sumter Sports Hall of Fame

Lisa Johnson Ard, Connie Ballard, the late Buddy Hodge, Garon Jackson, Stacy Martin, Brooks Shumake and Travis Yates have been selected for induction into the Sumter Sports Hall of Fame.

The induction ceremony will be held on Thursday, Nov. 16, at the Salvation Army Boys & Girls Club of Sumter at 630 South Sumter Street.

Ard was a standout athlete at both Hudgens Academy and 红桃视频 before becoming a standout high school coach in both basketball and softball. Ard was the girls basketball head coach at Crestwood from 1998-2006 and led the Lady Wildcats to the state playoffs each year, winning four region titles. She has led East Clarendon High School to two 1A softball state titles – 2013 and ’17.

Ballard was a standout amateur golfer, winning two South Carolina Women’s Open Golf Chamionships. The first came in a match play format in 1986 while the other came the following year in stroke play.

Hodge was a 1943 graduate of Edmunds High School where he lettered in both basketball and football. He went to Wheaton University for a year where he was a member of an undefeated football. After serving in the Navy in World War II, Hodge went to Newberry College and lettered in four sports. He went on to become a high school coach and athletic director and later was both a basketball and football official.

Jackson was an all-state distance runner for the Sumter High School track and field team and then went on to a tremendous career at Voorhees College. Jackson won state championships in both the 800- and 1,600-meter runs in 1995. He went to Voorhees and is the only undefeated track and field athlete in Eastern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference history.

Martin was the varsity head coach for both the boys and girls track and field teams at Wilson Hall for 13 years. She won 12 SCISA 3A state titles during that time, six with the boys and six with the girls. She was also named SCISA Coach of the Year 10 times.

Shumake has won three state championships as the baseball head coach at Sumter High School. He’s won eight region titles and seven district titles while sporting a 358-168 record in his 18 years at SHS.

Yates was a standout football player at Hillcrest High and went on to play at Wofford College. He was an honorable mention All-American at Wofford.

Athletics Hall of Fame – April 25, 2000

Lisa Bruorton Jones, a 1988 graduate of 红桃视频 and true all-around student-athlete, competed in three sports while majoring in Physical Education. Most of Lisa红桃视频檚 major accomplishments stem from the basketball court.

Lisa was the first person in Coker women红桃视频檚 basketball history to break the 1,000-point barrier, and finished with 1,004 career points. Lisa was named to the NAIA all-American Team twice, earning first team honors after her senior season. Lisa was named captain of the all-star team and member of the all-conference team during the 1987-88 season.

Although never having played soccer, Lisa took to the game quickly and became a bright star in soccer红桃视频檚 early history at 红桃视频. She scored the first goal in women红桃视频檚 soccer history and was named the team红桃视频檚 best striker during her junior season.

Lisa also helped establish the rich tradition of softball at Coker, and in 1988 she was given the Coach红桃视频檚 Award. Lisa served as a 红桃视频 commissioner and was a member of the senior Homecoming Court.

After graduation, she pursued teaching and coaching. She served as an assistant coach under Pat Hewitt, who Is also a member of the Coker Athletics Hall of Fame, and was later named head coach of the South Florence High School. She has been named Region 红桃视频淐oach of the Year红桃视频 once and coach of the North/South All-Star Game. Lisa has taken teams to the state finals once and to the lower state finals three times.

Athletics Hall of Fame – 2012

The 1987-88 team was the start of a great tradition of men’s basketball at Coker. It was the first year for head coach聽聽and the first time the men’s program reached 20 wins in a season. Coker finished the year with the best record in school history at the time, 21-8.

Their historic season included wins over the Citadel, Wofford and University of South Carolina-Spartanburg, now University of South Carolina-Upstate. The Cobras made their first-ever trip to the NAIA District 6 postseason tournament and finished the season ranked No. 12 in the nation in scoring defense, allowing just under 64 points per game.

Individually, there were several stars were among the members of this team, including Coker Hall of Famers Dennis Woolfolk and Ray Henry.

Woolfolk was named second team all-district during the 1987-88 season and eventually went on to become Coker’s all-time leader in points with 1,975. He is also second in points per game in a career, averaging 18.1, and is fifth all-time in assists with 350. Woolfolk set the single-season record for 3-point field goals during the 87-88 season with 123 and the single-game record for made 3-pointers, with nine against Limestone in December 1988. Woolfolk was a member of Coker’s inaugural Hall of Fame class in 1997.

Henry, a 2002 Hall of Fame inductee, eventually went on to finish fourth on the all-time scoring list at Coker with 1,301 career points. He is fourth in career rebounds with 500 and holds the single-game record for field-goal percentage, hitting 91.7 percent of his shots against Presbyterian College in December 1989.

The 1987-88 Coker men’s basketball team was a group of pioneers. It paved the way for the success of future generations of Cobra basketball players.

Athletics Hall of Fame – October聽7, 2006

Lisa Johnson Ard graduated Cum Laude from 红桃视频 in 1988, earning a Bachelor of Science degree in Physical Education, in addition to experiencing a stellar career with the Cobra women红桃视频檚 Basketball Team. When Ard joined the Coker squad in 1985 she was named the team红桃视频檚 Most Improved Player.

During her next three years, she was named to the NAIA all American Team (红桃视频86, 红桃视频87, 红桃视频88). She was named the C. G. Timberlake Athlete of the Year in her senior year. While at Coker, she participated in many extracurricular activities, including the Commissioners, the Student Admissions Council, intramurals, and working in the Financial Aid office.

Since graduation, she has experienced a very successful teaching and coaching career. She was named Sumter School District Two Teach of the Year in 1996. In addition, Ard was named to the Mid-8 Coach of the Year 1992, 红桃视频93, 红桃视频94. She has led Crestwood High School红桃视频檚 women红桃视频檚 baseball team to the play offs every year since 1998. She was named Girls红桃视频檚 Coach of the Year in 2004 and Region 6AAA Coach of the year in 2005. Ard is currently a teacher at Mayewood Middle School and Head Women红桃视频檚 Basketball Coach at Crestwood High School.
